Branding & Design

Within the Walls was a 2021 conceptual proposal for the Main Street BID (Business Improvement District), an initiative launched by an independent body and backed by the Government of Gibraltar.

The BID's aim was to develop a brand and identity for Gibraltar's city centre. This would serve to enhance the area for locals, tourists and businesses alike.

Logo & Colour

The visuals for Within the Walls were intended to compliment Gibraltar's distinct identity as a vibrant, multi-cultural society, influenced heavily by the Mediterranean, whilst also drawing inspiration from further afield.

A bold logomark was developed with a modernist approach. The mark is a depiction of one of the arches that facilitates passage through Gibraltar's historic city walls. These walls are fortifications dating back to as early as the 16th Century, they envelop Gibraltar's city centre and old town.

This was supported by a diverse and extensive colour palette, allowing plenty of scope from which a brand identity and tone of voice with personality could be further developed.

Typography

The typographic treatment for Within The Walls combined a heavy, block-like sans serif typeface (Midnight Sans, Colophon Foundry) and a sharp, modern interpretation of a classic serif typeface (Louize Display, 205TF). The typefaces were intended to live alongside one another, developing a striking identity revolving around balance through delicate juxtaposition

Midnight Sans references the weight and strength of the city walls themselves, whereas Louize Display pays homage to Gibraltar's rich history, whilst simultaneously looking forward to the future.

Motifs & Patterns

A suite of motifs inspired by tiling and architecture found around Gibraltar were developed. These were intended to be utilised as patterns and incorporated into wrought-iron street signage.

Limestone
